Understanding the
Domain Name System
DNS is the phonebook of the internet. It translates human-readable domain names
like example.com into IP addresses that computers use to identify each other.
What is DNS?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical, decentralized naming system that associates domain names with IP addresses. Without DNS, you would need to memorize numerical IP addresses like 192.0.2.1 to visit websites.
DNS operates on port 53 and uses both UDP and TCP for queries and zone transfers. It is one of the most critical components of internet infrastructure, handling billions of queries every day.
Quick Analogy
Think of DNS like a contact list on your phone. You type a friend's name, and the phone automatically dials their number. DNS does the same — you type google.com, and DNS resolves it to 142.250.80.46 so your browser can connect.
How DNS Resolution Works
From typing a URL to loading a page, DNS resolution involves multiple steps across distributed servers.
Recursive Resolver
Your ISP or a public resolver (like 8.8.8.8) acts as the middleman. It receives your query and does the heavy lifting — chasing down the answer through the DNS hierarchy on your behalf. It caches results to speed up future lookups.
Authoritative Server
The authoritative nameserver holds the actual DNS records for a domain. It is the final source of truth. When the recursive resolver reaches it, it returns the definitive IP address (or other record data) for the requested domain.
Resolution Step by Step
Browser Cache
Your browser first checks its own cache for a recent DNS record of the domain.
Operating System Cache
If not found, the OS checks its resolver cache and the hosts file.
Recursive Resolver Query
The OS sends the query to the configured recursive resolver (ISP or public DNS).
Root Nameserver
The resolver queries one of the 13 root server clusters, which directs it to the appropriate TLD server.
TLD Nameserver
The TLD server (e.g., .com) points the resolver to the authoritative nameserver for the domain.
Authoritative Response
The authoritative server returns the IP address. The resolver caches and delivers it to your browser.
Common DNS Record Types
DNS records are instructions stored in zone files that tell the DNS system how to respond to queries.
Address Record
Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. The most fundamental DNS record type. Example: example.com → 93.184.216.34
IPv6 Address Record
Same as an A record but maps to an IPv6 address. Example: example.com → 2606:2800:220:1::248
Canonical Name
Aliases one domain to another. Commonly used for subdomains. Example: www.example.com → example.com
Mail Exchange
Directs email to a mail server. Includes a priority value to determine server preference for delivery.
Text Record
Stores arbitrary text. Widely used for domain verification (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and security policies.
Nameserver Record
Delegates a DNS zone to use specific authoritative nameservers. Essential for domain management.
Start of Authority
Stores administrative info about a zone: primary nameserver, admin email, serial number, and refresh intervals.
Pointer Record
Performs reverse DNS lookup, mapping an IP address back to a domain name. Used for email verification.
Service Record
Specifies host and port for specific services (SIP, XMPP, LDAP). Used for service discovery protocols.
